“Nothing determines how people are viewed more than pop culture. The US government has spent fortunes researching film and TV as tools of propaganda, discovering, to no one’s surprise, that what people see in movies or on TV is what they believe to be true about the world. There is a reason an editor was yet again surprised this week to learn that I, an American by birth, did not live my life in Spanish. Movies and TV never show him people like me; in film and TV, women like me always have a Spanish accent. It is no coincidence, either, that the New York Daily News, when writing about my books, accused me of bringing chick lit to “the third world,” even though I write for an American audience. I am strong enough to fight this nonsense off. But what about the untold millions of women who aren’t as pugilistic as I am? Who is fighting for them?”

This is probably just me, but I feel like they’re mocking me. It makes me livid that they’re going to “pretend” to be poor to show why they’re shouldn’t be cuts, but they then get to go back to their lifestyle. I live this lifestyle. I have to make the small amount of food last. They don’t. They do this for a week and then they’re done. They get to go back to their paychecks. They get to go back to their salaries. They get to go back to their extravagant lifestyle of being able to buy fresh fucking fruit. I have to splurge, keyword splurge, on fresh fruit. I have to hope my blood doesn’t turn into ramen. (That’s a joke, or should have been. I’m not funny when I’m angry.) It’s just unfair that they’re going to live this lifestyle one week instead of listening to me. There is not reason for them not to just listen to us. They just want to seem like heroes for living this lifestyle for one week, while I’m vilified for living this lifestyle my entire life.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art presents cultures as they were meant for us to see, to get a glimpse into the past. An unbiased glimpse I thought, like most of the population would, taking it all as it was presented and believing it. Walking around the massive museum, taking in the Egyptian exhibit, Roman statues, things dating back to the B.C. era, these are all things I, and most of us take at face value. But now I have to wonder. The punk exhibit was based on an experience that I was very much a part of, and it was very misrepresented & opinionated— not presented as a culture in history. Not at face value either, though 80% of the patrons being paraded through there do not know this.

It was a weekday afternoon and the exhibit was so packed I was shocked. People were being herded around where they were met with brash sights & sounds, all of which acted as nothing more than a bow on top of a fashion exhibit: room after room of samey non-cutting edge modern fashion from recent years, many resembling “fancy” versions of Hollywood Blvd hooker store fashion. Lots of spiked heels & fishnets, buckles, etc. I figured I’d see a Chanel bag on display at some point…they have chains on them, right? That’s punk, right? Sadly, it is quite obvious that provoking the punk world was not on the Met’s agenda. What is very possibly on their agenda is creating sales & publicity for certain designers that they (The Costume Institute) seem to be promoting in a round about way.

All You Need to Know About Irrational “Self-Defense” Laws in Three Pictures

That’s Ezekiel Gilbert. He was acquitted yesterday in the murder of Lenora Ivie Frago, who had taken $150 from Gilbert for sex and then refused to have sex with him or give him the money back. So he shot her, not wanting to kill her (and it did take her a few months to die). But because Texas allows people to use deadly force in order to retrieve stolen property (and because the sex did not occur, despite prostitution being illegal, the money was considered stolen), Gilbert, for lack of a better phrase, got off.

That’s Ralph Wald. He was acquitted last week for the murder of Walter Conley. Conley had been in the middle of having sex with Wald’s wife, so, like any reasonable person, Wald claimed that he assumed his wife was being raped and shot Conley dead. His defense was Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, which allows anyone who believes that he or she is facing danger in his or her home to use deadly force. Wald said his wife was in danger, so he shot first and asked questions later. Oh, wait, actually he didn’t do that last part. He told police he was glad the guy was dead.

That’s Marissa Alexander. Last year, in Jacksonville, Florida, she wassentenced to 20 years in prison for firing a shot in the air to warn her husband, Rico Gray, to back off her. He had been arrested previously for domestic violence against her, beating her when she was pregnant, and on that day in 2010, he “approached her in a rage” when Alexander drove up to their house to get clothes. She was trying to move out and get away from Gray. Before she fired the shot, he had chased her through the house, broken down a door to get at her, and cornered her in the garage. The judge said she should have fled instead of firing twice into the air. At trial, her Stand Your Ground defense was rejected because the jury did not believe she faced imminent danger. She was convicted of aggravated assault and given the mandatory sentence. She is still in prison.

It’s TOTALLY OUT THERE and TOTALLY unapologetic. Which means the show doesn’t have to work from a set list of expectations and has a lot of freedom. (It actually reminds me a lot of Gargoyles, which mixes the same themes - mythology/ cop drama - and worked! So, I’m hardcore riding the nostalgia train. Also FYI you can thank Gargoyles for the term Xanatos Gambit.)

It’s the guys who did Fringe. Confession time: I haven’t watched Fringe but it’s been on my to do list forever. I have literally heard nothing but good things about it, like how they work with great themes, characters, and make weird things work.

Old vs. New America. Social commentary here we come. Like Captain America vs. Iron Man, it has the ability to comment on the progress (or lack thereof) made by America. Also loads of history nerding out to be had.

DIVERSITY. Nicole Beharie? John Cho? Orlando Jones? At least two female producers?

Biblical Themes. SO GREAT FOR COMMENTING ON HUMAN NATURE. And don’t get me started on my obsession with death personified.

World Building. Which means really amazing derivative works and metaphor and conflicting wants and even more social commentary. REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THE USE OF MIRRORS, NEGL. One of my favorite parts of Jonathan Strange in Mr. Norrell is the King’s Roads. They “lead everywhere. Heaven. Hell. The Houses of Parliament.… They were built by magic. Every mirror, every puddle, every shadow in England is a gate to those roads.”

It’s self-aware. In the trailer, a ton of the humor is based on the fact that it’s self-aware and seems willing to play with that fact. “You and Captain America here” “Who?” I c wot u did thar. It’s nice when a show doesn’t take itself too seriously and is willing to have fun with that.

So literally this show all comes down to how fleshed out the characters are and I HAVE HIGH HOPES OKAY. Blah blah blah go join fuckyeahsleepyhollow.

HEY NORTHCOASTRANDOM. this is for you. Let’s watch it.
